About Our Bloodline
Background to the Baillieswells Bloodline

Foxhill Farthing was the first Baillieswells Border Terrier and came to Stone Cottage in December 1975. She was bred by Dorothy Miller (Foxhill) who lived in Eddleston in Peeblesshire in the Scottish Borders. Farthing, pet name Penny, was born on 15th October 1975 and was by Champion Step Ahead out of Foxhill Freckles. She had several litters of puppies; one of these puppies by Aiket Wishbone was Baillieswells Nickel. Though he went to a pet home, out of Fossebank Catrina he sired Baillieswells Quarter who in turn, mated to Thoraldby Candyfloss sired Loiriston Crown of Baillieswells. Loiriston is the affix of Dr Ron Wheatley, who, at that time, also lived near Aberdeen.

All the early Baillieswells Borders were named after coins, the affix Baillieswells being granted by the Kennel Club in 1978. Crown was mated to another bitch of Ron Wheatley’s, Thoraldby Mary Poppins to produce Loiriston Lasgarra of Baillieswells, she in turn was mated to Ch. Ashbrae Jaffa to produce Baillieswells Halfcrown. Loiriston Seud of Baillieswells resulted from a mating of Halfcrown to Loiriston Jet. Jet, who was by Ch. Ashbrae Jaffa out of Thoraldby Mary Poppins, was a litter sister of Ch. Loiriston Amber. Seud was mated to Lexing Scott Free (Glenlea Sunburst of Todgrove x Loiriston Lassarina) resulting in Knockando of Baillieswells. Knockando was the first of the Baillieswells Border Terriers to bear the name of a single malt whisky, and all subsequent Baillieswells Border Terriers have been named after single malts.

In 1984 Loiriston Mear of Baillieswells (Ch. Ashbrae Jaffa x Loiriston Jet), bred by Ron Wheatley, came to live with the Baillieswells Border Terrier, she was mated to Knockando to produce Baillieswells Auchentoshan, subsequently UK, Swedish and Norwegian Champion, and Baillieswells Kinclaith, they were born on 10th March 1990.
Mear and Knockando both obtained their Junior Warrants and one Reserve CC each.

In June 1996 the Baillieswells Border Terriers moved to Chestnut Tree Farm in Whaddon, which is in Cambridgeshire. Chestnut Tree Farm dates from medieval times, probably the latter half of the 15th century, and has been added to over the past five hundred years. It is no longer a working farm and the three and a half acres remaining have been made into a garden. A tributary of the River Cam runs through the garden.
Five borders came to Chestnut Tree Farm from Scotland, Crown and Mear, Kinclaith and two puppies by Auchentoshan, one out of Ch. Thoraldby Forever Amber, named Thoraldby Sassenach of Baillieswells, the other out of Ch. Campanologia Swirrel Edge, named Thoraldby Rhosdhu of Baillieswells. Sassenach was mated to Kinclaith to produce Baillieswells Tullibardine, who was accidentally mated back to Sassenach to produce Glenfarclas.

Glen Garioch resulted from a mating of Rhosdhu to Thoraldby Postscript, a litter brother of Sassenach. Glen Garioch and Glenfarclas mated together produced Baillieswells Caol Ila. Baillieswells Glengoyne, the latest Baillieswells Border Terrier to enter the show ring, was born on 1st March 2002 and is by Clipstone Royal Sovereign out of Caol Ila, Royal Sovereign has brought new blood into the Baillieswells line.

Thoraldby Postscript was also mated to Glenfarclas and this resulted in Tamnavulin and Tomintoul. Most inconveniently they were born on Xmas Eve 1999. Tomintoul has recently been mated to Tythrop Tumbling Dice with Baillieswells Macallan being born on the 10th January 2003. He has gone to Marie Sharp (Rhozzum) in Wales, and recently made his debut in the show ring winning puppy classes in both of his first two Championship Shows.

Tumbling Dice is by Tythrop Transatlantic who goes back to Auchentoshan, through Ch Tythrop Gold Quill and Thoraldby Postscript, and his dam, Tythrop Up Tempo at Bromscar who also descends from Auchentoshan through Chapelfell Remember Me and Baillieswells Dailuaine (dam of Ch. Chapelfell Tulle) who is by Auchentoshan out of Baillieswells Te Bheag, and through Ch. Wintergarden Rhapsody at Tythrop who is by Auchentoshan out of Soda Symphony. Baillieswells Te Bheag is by Otterkin Pioneer out of Baillieswells Gooseberry. Gooseberry is a daughter of Mear by Ch. Thoraldby Tiptoes.

In all, in the past twenty eight years, just over a hundred Border Terriers have born the Baillieswells name. So you will see we are only a small kennel, having on average about one litter of puppies a year.
That just about completes the history of the Baillieswells Border Terriers from 1975 to 2003.
